Survivors of Homicide Awareness Month
Survivors of Homicide Awareness Month (SHAM) takes place each year from November 20 – December 20 as a month-long effort to inform, influence, and impact how society views and responds to homicide victims, their families, and first responders. SHAM provides an opportunity to raise public awareness about the profound effects of murder on families and communities while uplifting the peace-building efforts of survivors.
In addition, it offers the SOHP team and the community a dedicated space during the holiday season for survivors to come together, honor and celebrate their loved ones, and recognize those who serve and support them.
We host three events annually:
1. Operation Outreach – Research shows that individuals experiencing homelessness are significantly more likely to be targets of violent crime. Recent studies show that nearly 1 in 2 people experiencing homelessness (49%) report being victims of violent attacks, with many incidents occurring within the past year.
In response, and in honor of SHAM, the Survivors of Homicide and Other Violent Crimes Program hosts an annual event designed to bring care, connection, and community to those most vulnerable. The event includes a shared meal, access to information about available programming and services, and direct referrals to supportive resources.
This year, we are honored to partner with Cordelia’s Pantry and Humility Homes on Thursday, November 20th, from 3:00–6:00 p.m.
2. Pizza and Patrol – When a homicide occurs, law enforcement is often the first on scene and among the first to respond to families’ needs. This event creates space for families who have lost loved ones, community members impacted by violence, and first responders to come together to connect, reflect, share stories, and build meaningful relationships.
This year, we are honored to partner with the Davenport Police Department. The event will be held on Thursday, December 11th, from 6:00–7:30 p.m. at the Fairmount Community Center.
3. SHAM Holiday Support Event – The Survivors of Homicide and Other Violent Crimes Program hosts an annual holiday support event for clients who have lost a loved one to homicide. This event provides a safe, therapeutic space for families to commemorate their loved ones’ memories while participating in holiday crafts and activities that foster connection, reflection, and healing.
This year, the Holiday Survivor Support Party will be held on Wednesday, December 18th, from 4:00–6:00 p.m.

This Día de los Muertos, Family Resources invites the community to join us in honoring the lives of those lost to community violence. Our programs will host a Community Altar Display to remember and celebrate loved ones whose lives were taken by gun violence, violent crimes, domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking.
We also invite community members to contribute photos of loved ones passed who were survivors of community violence, domestic abuse, sexual abuse, human trafficking, or other violent crimes to be included in our altar display. Together, we can honor their memory and stand united against violence.
If you would like Family Resources to display a photo of your loved one, please contact:
